Scheepers lives up to qualifying seed

Walking with ghosts of Secessionville

Gus Patterson (left) drove to the Lowcountry from Michigan to research his relative's role as a Union soldier who fought in the Battle of Secessionville. He got help from Randy Burbage, whose relative fought there for the Confederacy. They spent time together touring the site last week.

This time, Chanelle Scheepers lived up to her ranking as the No. 1 seed in the Family Circle Cup qualifier.

The 26-year-old South African posted a 6-7, 6-2 6-3 victory over Eva Hrdinova on Sunday afternoon to reach the main draw for the second time in three years.

She was the top seed in last year's qualifier, but her stay was short as she absorbed a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Catalina Castano.

Sunday, Scheepers was able to smile after she stepped off the clay court of Althea Gibson Club Court.

"I think as a player you always hope to get in the main draw, but I see it a little differently after playing in the main draw in 2008," said Scheepers, who began 2010 as the No. 130 player in the world. "I was a little disappointed I didn't go directly into the main draw, and I think it affected the way I played in the qualifier."

Scheepers, who joined the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in 2001 after winning three ITF events, said last year's loss wasn't on her mind as she prepared to battle Hrdinova, the No. 15 player in the qualifiers.

"To be honest with you, it didn't cross my mind," Scheepers said. "I didn't think I would be the No. 1 seed this year. I though I might be No. 2 or 3. I just wanted to learn from my mistakes. I don't even remember who I played last year. You play so many matches in a year that you don't remember the names.

"You try to remember the details of how you play. You take what you did wrong and try to correct it. You try to take the stuff you didn't wrong and correct your game."

Scheepers said Hrdinova served well to win the first set of the match, which lasted two hours and eight minutes. "I think I settled in in that second set and started playing my game. I got control of the match, and that gave me confidence.

Scheepers played in the Australian Open and Roland Garros last year, losing in the first round of both Grand Slam events.
