SPARTANBURG — A woman shot and wounded by an off-duty Spartanburg County sheriff’s deputy during a concealed weapons permit class has been released from the hospital.

Thirty-three-year-old Crystal Smith of Landrum was released from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center on Tuesday.

Smith was struck by a .22-caliber bullet during the class in Chesnee on Saturday.

Deputy Calvin Smith was showing another student how to grip the gun when it fired, hitting Crystal Smith in the arm and side. The officer and the victim are not related.

Sheriff Chuck Wright says Calvin Smith did not know there was a bullet in the chamber. Smith is a SLED-certified concealed weapons permit instructor.

Master Deputy Craig Bradley says the investigation is over and no charges will be filed.
