Nine area high schools will join with seven out-of-state schools for the 16-team field in the 2015 Rotary Roundball Classic to be held Dec. 27-30 at North Charleston High School.
The 23rd annual Classic tips off with three games on Sunday (Dec. 27), followed on Monday (Dec. 28) by five games in two separate eight-team brackets.
“We have another great field of teams and the competition should be very strong in both brackets of play,” said Danny Kassis, who coordinates and recruits teams for the event. “The out-of-state teams will feature a lot of individual talent. It will be some very good high school basketball.”
Forming the Foundation bracket will be local teams West Ashley, Northwood Academy, Pinewood Prep and Goose Creek, along with Germantown Academy of Pennsylvania, St. Vincent Pallotti of Maryland, Sandy Creek of Georgia and Lincoln High of New York.
Lincoln High finished 25-3 last year and counts NBA stars Stephon Marbury and Lance Stephenson among its most accomplished alumni. Sandy Creek and Germantown each have several Division I prospects or verbal commitments.
Teams comprising the International bracket include James Island, Porter-Gaud, Stall, Wando, North Charleston, Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey, Peachtree Ridge of Georgia, and Bullis School of Maryland.
Peachtree Ridge head coach Keith Arrington is bringing his third different school to the tournament and has won more than 600 games as a head coach. Bullis School won the event in 2011.
“Over the years our tournament has gained a very nice reputation and a lot of schools love coming to Charleston over the holidays,” Kassis said.
