The Charleston RiverDogs' bats started off hot on an equally hot Sunday at Riley Park.
The RiverDogs' pitching then took over en route to a 4-2 win over the Rome Braves in South Atlantic League action.
In the bottom of the second, Charleston jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Zoilo Almonte scored from first on a Rob Lyerly double. Lyerly later scored on a DeAngelo Mack single.
In the past three games, Lyerly has hit safely seven times. He went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Charleston increased its lead to 3-0 in the third inning. After stealing second and advancing to third on an error, Jimmy Paredes scored on an Almonte single.
Rome got on the board in the top of the eighth inning. Braeden Schlehuber led off the inning with a single. After stealing second, a throwing error from the catcher advanced Schlehuber to third. He scored on a Jace Whitmer single to right.
In the bottom of the eighth Charleston got an insurance run. After leading off with a single, Paredes stole second, and moved to third on an error. Almonte hit a sac fly in left center to score Paredes, making the score 4-1.
Rome looked to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth. Cory Harrilchak singled, and Mycal Jones followed with another single. After a wild pitch, which advanced both runners, Jordan Kreke hit a sac fly to score Harrilchak.
Charleston starting pitcher Josh Romanski (1-1) pitched six shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out four to earn the win.
Robinson Lopez (2-3) was charged with the loss.
Charleston and Rome continue their four-game series today. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m. Sean Black (4-3) will start for the RiverDogs and the Braves will start Arodys Vizcaino (8-3).
