ROME, Ga. -- The RiverDogs scored four runs in the second and fifth innings and hung on in the wild ninth inning during a 10-8 victory over Rome on Friday night.
It was the seventh straight loss for the Braves (1-8, 26-53).
Charleston (4-5, 30-49) struck for four runs in the second against Rome's All-Star right-hander Caleb Brewer, getting it done with one swing. Kevin Mahoney and Ramon Flores singled, while Kelvin De Leon walked to load the bases. Garrison Lassiter came to the plate and blasted a grand slam over the right-centerfield wall for a 4-0 lead. It was the RiverDogs' first grand slam of the season and Lassiter's first home run with the RiverDogs since Sept. 2009.
In the fifth, Eduardo Sosa scored on a wild pitch, Mahoney drove in a run with a bases loaded walk, while Flores looped a two-run double down the left-field line.
Rome scratched out a run in the bottom of the ninth against RiverDogs reliever Mark Montgomery. He rebounded to fan the next two hitters, and struck out the following two after that, but wild pitches on the third strike allowed both runners to reach to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Montgomery flashed a devastating slider to dispose of Hefflinger.
