It is hot!
On land or on the water, everyone can agree it has been hot.
It is usually cooler on the water, and that has been the case in the afternoon. But mornings have been brutally hot with little breeze.
Here are a few tips I share with staff members and sailors at Charleston Community Sailing:
1. Keep hydrated with water or drinks with electrolytes.
2. Wear light-colored, breathable clothing.
3. Protect yourself from the sun with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.
4. Avoid caffeine because it will promote dehydration.
5. Last but not least, take a swim break if needed. Mostly because it is fun!
Charleston Yacht Club Open Regatta
This weekend marks the 76th year of the Charleston Yacht Club Open Regatta. For the last several years, more than 100 boats have participated in the event, and this year will be no different. Registration begins today at the Charleston Yacht Club and is open to all One Design classes. Here's the schedule:
Today: 5-7 p.m., registration, ChYC Flag Room.
Saturday: 8:30-10:30 a.m., registration, ChYC Flag Room; 10 a.m., welcome and skippers' meeting, ChYC Patio; 1 p.m., first warning, races to follow.
Sunday: 12:30 p.m., first warning, races to follow.
I will be in charge of the Junior Course and, as always, I look forward to seeing the fresh talent of youth sailors out on the water. Following sailing on Sunday, remember to head over to the ChYC Flag Room for the trophy presentation, including the Women's Award and the Lockwood Trophy.
Wednesday marked the start of the second half of the Charleston Sail Loft Summer Series that continues through Aug. 24. Following racing, stop by the Charleston Yacht Club for awards and $5 burgers. Results and boats that are looking for a crew can be found online at www.charlestonoceanracing.org.
All sports have rules of etiquette. I'm curious to know what you think is sailing etiquette or important sailing tips to know for the newbies. Please email me your thoughts and tips.
Last week, I wrote about One Design sailing and how to get involved with the open regattas, but I forgot to mention the Rockville Regatta hosted by Sea Island Yacht Club that takes place the first weekend in August.

Thursdays: JIYC Fun Racing
July 16-17: Charleston Yacht Club Open Regatta
