Reel Passion released a blue marlin and a white marlin Saturday and captured its second Bohicket Marina Invitational Billfish Tournament title. Reel Passion, owned by Bill Ingram and captained by Gary Richardson, also won the tournament as well as the South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series overall title in 2011.
The Bohicket tournament was the second of four events that comprise the 2015 South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series.
The Reel Passion crew earned 900 release points Saturday (600 for the blue marlin and 300 for the white marlin) to go along with a blue marlin release Friday for 1,500 points. Reel Passion won $26,245.
Second place went to My Three Sons, owned by Hunter Edwards and captained by Michael Mattson, with 1,200 points scored on two blue marlin releases Thursday.
Mutts & Jeff, owned and captained by Tom Stanek, also had 1,200 points for two blue marlin caught Thursday. My Three Sons took second based on being the first of the boats to get to 1,200 points.
Legal Holiday weighed a 55.6-pound wahoo Saturday to win that category, while Summer Girl’s 36.0-pound dolphin from Thursday won that division. No tuna were weighed.
Participants released five blue marlin, two white marlin and two sailfish Saturday. The 20 boats finished the event with a total of 27 billfish releases — 17 blue marlin, two white marlin and eight sailfish.
One of Saturday’s blue marlin releases was by 78-year-old Manley Eubank aboard Sportin’ Life.
Miss Wy, which would have finished fourth at Bohicket with 1,200 points and won the season-opening Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament, holds a narrow lead over Reel Passion in the Governor’s Cup standings. Miss Wy has released five blue marlin, all caught by Michael Lalich, in the two tournaments.
The next S.C. Governor’s Cup event is the Carolina Billfish Classic, which will be fished June 19-20 out of Toler’s Cove Marina in Mount Pleasant.
