Reel Passion looking to wrap up Governor’s Cup

Reel Passion will be looking to wrap up its second South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series Championship at the MegaDock Billfishing Tournament that begins Thursday at the Charleston City Marina.

Owned by Bill Ingram and captained by Gary Richardson, Reel Passion also will be looking to win its third straight tournament in the four-event Governor’s Cup. Reel Passion won both the Bohicket Marina Invitational Billfish Tournament and the Carolina Billfish Classic.

Scoring in Governor’s Cup events is 600 points for releasing a blue marlin, 300 points for releasing a white marlin and 200 points for releasing a sailfish. Blue marlin that are landed receive one point per pound.

Reel Passion has accumulated 4,575 points heading into the MegaDock tournament, 1,500 more than second-place Miss Wy, which won the season-opening Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament. Caramba, which won the Governor’s Cup in 2006, 2010 and 2012, is third with 2,875 points; followed by My Three Sons, 2,475; Petrel, 2,250; Sportin’ Life, 1,775; Home Run, 1,450; Three J’s, 1,425; Bad Becky, 1,275; and Mirage, 1,250.

Boats can fish two days between Thursday and Saturday, and this year boats will be allowed to weigh tuna, dolphin and wahoo at Georgetown Landing as well as the City Marina. Daily weigh-ins are 5-7 p.m. Parking and a shuttle bus to the event is located at the corner of Lockwood Boulevard and Broad Street. The shuttle runs from 5-10 p.m.
