MOUNT PLEASANT -- Pete Kellerman, who just completed his freshman season at Mississippi, joined some lofty company Thursday, shooting a course-and tournament record 62 to jump into the lead at the Rice Planters Amateur golf tournament.

Kellerman's 10-under-par effort, which included a bogey, broke the old mark of 63 held by Stewart Cink (1993), Aron Price (2004), Josh Younger (2007) and Brooks Koepka (2009). The 72-hole tournament record is 18-under-par 270, set last year by Koepka.

Kellerman, who opened with a 2-under 70, is two shots in front of Brandon Hagy of California-Berkeley, who has recorded back-to-back 67s. Wes Roach of Duke and Yeamans Hall member Matt Laydon are tied for third at 136.

First-round leader Ryan Lynch shot 77 on Thursday and is at 142.

Kellerman opened the round with birdies at 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 but bogeyed the ninth to make the turn at 4-under 32. That was the only blip of his round, as he birdied 10 and 12, eagled the par-5 13th, and birdied 15 and 16 before closing with pars for a back-nine 30.

Hagy shot even on the front nine with a birdie on the fifth and bogey on the ninth. His back-nine birdies came in bunches, at 12 and 13 and then at 16, 17 and 18.

The tournament continues through Saturday, with the field cut to the low 54 and ties following today's round.
