Rays prevail in shootout

Stingrays 3, Gladiators 2 (SO)

Duluth, Ga. -- Goaltender Daren Machesney made 22 saves and defenseman Zach Tarkir scored in the sixth round of the shootout to give the South Carolina Stingrays a 3-2 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators at The Arena at Gwinnett Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Stingrays (14-9-0-1) got goals from Trent Campbell and Tarkir in the shootout, with Machesney blocking five of six chances.

Joey Haddad scored the opening goal of regulation to give the Gladiators (10-8-5-3) a 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.

South Carolina scored two unanswered goals in regulation to take a 2-1 lead.

Defenseman Nick Tabisz buried a rebound off the left pad of Gladiators netminder Jeff Jakaitis on a Sean Dolan assist to tie the score, then took the lead when Campbell slapped a pass from Pierre-Luc O'Brien past Jakaitis from the top of the right-wing circle.

Gladiators forward Colin Vock tied the contest late in regulation, tipping a shot from defenseman Shane Sims past Machesney at 16:39.

South Carolina overcame an 0-for-6 showing on the power play, holding the Gladiators to 0 for 5 on the power play.

The Stingrays return to the North Charleston Coliseum on Friday against the Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. for Toys for Tots night. Unwrapped toy donations will be accepted at the Stingrays customer service table behind section 110.
