Radebaugh gets contract extension

Charleston Southern men’s basketball coach Barclay Radebaugh.

After leading his team to back-to-back 19-win seasons, including a Big South Conference regular-season title this year, Charleston Southern men’s basketball coach Barclay Radebaugh was mentioned as a candidate for various job openings around the country.

On Friday, he and Charleston Southern athletic director Hank Small made it clear that Radebaugh will continue to guide the Buccaneers’ program for the foreseeable future, announcing a multi-year contract extension.

Charleston Southern would not provide details of the contract, but Small said the deal represents “a significant long-term commitment by the university.”

The Buccaneers finished 19-13 this past season, including a 12-4 record in the Big South Conference. CSU advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament and made its first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament.

“I think it works for everybody that we were able to put this all together,” Small said. “It’s a two-way street. Loyalty works both ways. The support and the success work both ways. Barclay’s commitment to us illustrates that.”

Radebaugh, who is 107-136 at CSU in eight seasons, had five consecutive losing seasons to begin his tenure as head coach but has guided the program to 54 victories over the last three seasons.

He says the long-term commitment is equally as strong from his perspective.

“There were years when this institution made a commitment to me when maybe I didn’t deserve that commitment,” said Radebaugh, who needs 15 wins next season to become the school’s all-time winningest coach at 122 victories.

“We had some lean years but they never wavered. I believe commitment goes both ways. I am interested in returning that commitment.

“One of the things I take great pride in is being the front porch for our university. Certainly athletics is not the most important part of a university but often times it is the most visible. We feel we have a great opportunity as a basketball program to expose the great things that are happening at this University.”

Radebaugh also is happy to put the rumor mill to rest.

“There has been a lot of talk out there and it was hurting our recruiting,” said Radebaugh. “I am committed to being the basketball coach here and I am very happy and satisfied with the commitment made to me by the university.”

In addition to the contract commitment made to Radebaugh, Small indicated that current members of Radebaugh’s staff also received raises as a reward for their efforts.

“We wanted to elevate in that area (coaching salaries) as well,” said Small. “We think our coaches are doing a great job. Coach Radebaugh has consistently given credit to his staff for the success that the basketball program has had lately. We wanted to do what we could do to help them enjoy an extended tenure here at Charleston Southern.”
