ORANGEBURG --Tuesday marked the midway point in S.C. State's preseason drills. The Bulldogs worked out in shells and shorts for two hours as they continued to "refine" their offensive and defensive schemes and acclimate the players to the hot conditions they will face in Atlanta Sept. 4 against Georgia Tech.
Center Sam Timothy spent most of Tuesday's practice at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium with ice on his injured right ankle. Defensive lineman Ronell Ferguson remained out following his light head injury suffered a week ago and place-kicker Blake Erickson was also kept out of practice with what Pough said was a sore back and expected him back for Saturday's second scrimmage.
Even with the season opener 18 days away, Pough is not trying to rush his starters back into action.
"We try to be real cautious about the injuries we do have," he said. "If we try to do too much too soon, it might be a formula for not getting back or when you do get back, you just kind of get reinjured. So we try to be real careful about making sure that we get those guys the proper attention and the proper amount of time, especially this time of year and especially for those guys who we kind of know what they can do anyway so that we can make sure when we get them back, we'll get them back for good."
The Citadel worked out in their final two-a-day session of fall camp on Tuesday at Willson Field. The Bulldogs worked out for 2 1/2 hours in overcast conditions in the low 80s in the morning and then again for two hours under sunny skies in the afternoon with temperatures in the upper-80s.
"We had a better afternoon practice than morning practice today," coach Kevin Higgins said. "We went in full pads again and worked hard on fundamentals and techniques.
"Our wide receivers must be more physical on their stalk blocking so we dedicate a period a day to go live against the defensive backs. Both offense and defense worked on our red zone attack against each other."
The Citadel will host Meet the Bulldogs on Saturday, following a scrimmage at 1:15 p.m.
The Bulldogs' season opener will take place at home on Sept. 4 against Chowan. Tickets are available in The Citadel ticket office for the 1 p.m. matchup. against the Hawks
