Porter-Gaud vs. Pinewood Prep, arguably SCISA’s top rivalry, moves to the soccer pitch today to decide the Class AAA boys’ state champion.

The Cyclones and Panthers culminate a day of soccer finals as the league crowns its state champs at the University of South Carolina’s Stone Field.

The Porter-Gaud girls also go for a state title when the Cyclones play Cardinal Newman at 4:30 p.m. The Northwood Academy boys play Oakbrook Prep at 2:30 p.m. in the Class AA-A state title.

The Porter-Gaud vs. Pinewood match might have seemed improbable a couple of days ago. Porter-Gaud had to travel to Hammond, a No. 1 seed, and trailed 2-1 at halftime Wednesday night. But the Cyclones rallied to tie it in regulation and won in overtime.

Pinewood, meanwhile, gained a 1-0, shootout upset of top-ranked and defending champion Cardinal Newman.

Pinewood entered the game with only a 12-10 record, but played clutch when it counted. Pinewood handed Cardinal Newman its first shutout in 65 matches.

Both Porter-Gaud teams have gone nearly a decade since their last state championship.
