Palmetto Pros: Stratford’s Wieters, Charleston Southern’s Parnell shine in wins

Former Stratford High School star Matt Wieters dropped an opposite-field double just inside the foul line for the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the Orioles beat the Royals, 4-3, on Tuesday night.

“I was leaning it,” Wieters told reporters after the game. “And I was pretty excited when the umpire made the fair signal.”

Wieters was 2 for 4 with two doubles and three runs batted-in, boosting his average to .234 and giving him 18 RBI for the season.

Elsewhere among Lowcountry players in pro baseball Tuesday night:

• Reliever Bobby Parnell (Charleston Southern) got the win after Matt Harvey’s nine-inning, one-hit performance for the Mets. Parnell (3-0) worked a perfect 10th, striking out two, in the Mets’ 1-0 win over the White Sox. Harvey struck out 12 and walked none over nine innings, but was pulled when the game went into extra innings.

• Justin Smoak (Stratford HS, USC) was 1 for 4 in the Mariners’ 4-1 loss to the Pirates, and his batting .236.

• Brett Gardner (Holly Hill, College of Charleston) was 0 for 1 with a walk and a strikeout in the Yankee’s 2-0 loss at Colorado, and is batting .269.

In the minors;

• Chris McGuiness (James Island, The Citadel) was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored for Class AAA Round Rock, and is hitting .263.

• Justin Greene (Stratford HS) was 0 for 4 for Class AA Mobile, and is hitting .265.

• Reese Havens (Bishop England HS, USC) was 1 for 4 for Class AAA Las Vegas, and is hitting .274.

• Pitcher Mike Cisco (Wando HS, USC) worked one inning of hitless relief for Class AA Arkansas. He’s 1-0 with a 2.57 earned-run average in 12 appearances.
