Palmetto Pros: Matt Wieters’ 3-run homer propels Orioles past Yankees

Matt Wieters hit a three-run homer to boost the Orioles to a 6-3 win over the Yankees, highlighting Wednesday night’s play for Lowcountry players in pro baseball.

The Stratford High School product homered off Yankees rookie Preston Claiborne in the third inning, his seventh homer of the season. He’s batting .230 with 26 runs batted-in.

• In the same game, Brett Gardner (Holly Hill, College of Charleston) went 0 for 1 as a pinch-hitter. He’s batting .254 for the Yankees.

• Justin Smoak (Stratford HS, USC) went 0 for 4 in the Mariners’ 7-1 loss to the Angels, striking out three times. He’s batting .240.

In the minors:

• Pitcher John Cornely (Bishop England HS, Wofford) turned in his third straight appearance without allowing a run. He worked one inning with no hits and a strikeout, and is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA and one save for Class A Lynchburg.

• Reese Havens (Bishop England HS, USC) was 1 for 1 as a pinch-hitter for Class AAA Las Vegas, and is batting .241.
