MOUNT PLEASANT — When all the smoke had cleared and 100 points showed on the board, Palmetto Christian had plenty of reason to celebrate.

The Eagles (5-0) continued the best start in school history and gained a measure of revenge against an old rival with a 54-46 victory over visiting Colleton Prep on Friday night.

“We had to step up,” said Palmetto Christian head coach Jim Daniel. “This team (Colleton Prep) has had our number since I’ve been here. They’re an extremely physical football team, and we knew we had to step up and match that, and I think we did. It’s a big step for our program to beat them.”

The War Hawks (3-3) had defeated the Eagles in their five previous meetings, including a 50-30 win that knocked Palmetto Christian out of the state playoffs last season.

But the Eagles’ dynamic duo of quarterback JT Waters and tailback Bayne Hirshman made sure the streak would end Friday. Waters accounted for 343 yards of offense and scored five touchdowns (one receiving, four rushing) to lead the Eagles. Hirshman rushed 16 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagles all but cemented the victory on Waters’ 74-yard touchdown run in the final minute.

Palmetto Christian was able to hold down Colleton Prep fullback Heath Fisk just enough to hang on for the win. Fisk rushed 26 times for 185 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead the War Hawks.

“Every drive was crucial and every opportunity to score was crucial,” said Colleton Prep head coach Leroy Riley.

“It came down to a scoring match, and unfortunately there were some times we didn’t answer.”
