Old Dominion ends The Citadel's historic season

The Citadel

The Citadel's first postseason appearance lasted just one game, as Old Dominion eliminated the Bulldogs from the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Tournament with a 67-59 victory Thursday night.

ODU (22-10) will host Belmont in the second round Monday. The Citadel ends its season with a 20-13 record.

Demetrius Nelson scored 25 points with seven rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, and Cameron Wells added 13. Keyon Carter led OD with 17 points.

An early 8-0 run gave ODU a working margin at 10-4 and established the Monarchs' reign on the boards. They got five shots on one possession, the 6-8 Carter finally converting the fifth try. He hit another follow shot and a hook for a 12-6 advantage, and the Monarchs pulled ahead by 10 on a Darius James floater at 24-14.

The Citadel cut the gap to 31-24 on a Wells-to-Brown bucket at 1:03, and got the ball back with a chance to climb within four. But Wells anticipated a Brown cut that didn't happen and traveled, and Marsharee Neely hit a jumper with five seconds left to give ODU a 33-24 edge at the half.

The Citadel made 10 of 24 shots in the first half, but just 1 of 9 from 3-point range. ODU took 21 rebounds to 15 for The Citadel, including an 8-2 edge on the offensive glass.
