Oetgen, Miller repeat as top sailors in James Island Yacht Club Regatta

Eric Oetgen of Savannah Yacht Club and Michael Miller of James Island Yacht Club repeated as the top award winners in the James Island Yacht Club Regatta sailed Saturday and Sunday.

Oetgen won the A.C. Hollings Award as the winning skipper in the regatta’s largest class, Lightnings, which had 16 entries. Oetgen finished first in all but the fourth of six Lightning class races.

Michael Miller of James Island Yacht Club won the Easterling Award for skippering the winning boat in the Sea Island One Design with a second and three firsts and a throwout of fourth. Nine boats competed in the SIOD class.

Joel Hurley of the Halifax Sailing Association in Daytona Beach, Fla., won the Sunfish Senior division and in doing so won the Southeast Sunfish Championship. Hurley finished first in five of the six Sunfish Senior races, and his throwout race was a third-place finish in the third race. He won the John Anderson Trophy and qualified for a spot in the Sunfish Worlds this year in Peru.

The James Island Yacht Club youngest sailor award went to Molly Loring, who finished third in the Opti Green class. The James Island Yacht Club oldest sailor award went to Chip Whiteside, who was fourth in Lasers.

This year’s James Island Yacht Club Regatta, the first of the five local yacht club regattas, drew 105 entries. The next event in the Charleston schedule will be sailed July 11-12 out of Hobcaw Yacht Club.
