College of Charleston sophomore pitcher Bailey Ober will not start this weekend against No. 21 South Carolina, Cougars head coach Monte Lee confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

Ober, who was the consensus national freshman pitcher of the year in 2014, suffered an undisclosed injury in January. Lee said that Ober could be used out of the bullpen against the nationally-ranked Gamecocks.

“He had a setback and we’re going to take it slowly,” Lee said. “Bailey has been throwing some out of the bull pen and potentially that’s where we’ll use him this weekend. We don’t want to rush Baily back before he’s ready.”

Last season, Ober was 10-3 a year ago with a team-low 1.52 ERA. He had 85 strikeouts in 106.2 innings and just 19 walks.

The 25th-ranked Cougars will start Taylor Clark (10-4, 2.51 ERA) on Friday against the Gamecocks and Nathan Helvey (3-4, 3.78) on Saturday and Eric Bauer (6-2, 2.09) on Sunday.

The Cougars were 44-19 in 2014 and advanced to the Lubbock Super Regional, losing back-to-back 1-0 games to the Red Raiders.
