The Northwood Academy girls are a win away from the Class AA SCISA state softball championship.

The Chargers picked up a 5-1 victory over Thomas Heyward at home Monday night in the opener of the best-of-three series.

Game 2 is scheduled at Thomas Heyward tonight.

Senior Taylor Luff pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight batters to raise her record to 14-1.

Northwood, 16-1, collected seven hits and plated two runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Jessica Graham hit an RBI double in the third and Sam Chubb added and RBI single to make it 2-0.

Danel Phillips blasted a two-run triple in the fourth inning.

The Chargers' final run came on Jordan Strang's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.

"Our philosophy is to win every inning," Northwood coach Becky Ellison said. "We did that tonight. We played well defensively and put the ball in play. Thomas Heyward is a great team. We have to do that tomorrow."
