HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Northwood Academy raced to a five-run lead through 3 1/2 innings and held on for a 6-4 victory over Hilton Head Christian on Tuesday that forced the SCISA Class AAA baseball championship series to a decisive third game.
The final game will be played Thursday at a neutral site to be determined.
The Chargers’ David Barnette pitched a complete game. “He got through a rough spot and got better toward the end,” coach Jerry Stoots said. “He pitched well down the stretch. He gave us what we needed — we’re about out of pitching.”
The Eagles (21-10) had their ace, Devin McGuinness, on the mound Tuesday, which they hoped would be enough to close out the series. He gave up six runs, two earned, and struck out seven. The Chargers trailed 1-0 before they scored five runs in the third inning. Ryan Shipley’s two-run single capped the big inning.
Barnette yielded three hits and struck out four for Northwood (20-9). The Chargers also were led by Chris Cook, who was 4 for 4 with a double, and Ty Powell, who was 2 for 3.
