North Florida leads Kiawah Spring Classic

North Florida shot a 9-over-par 297 Sunday to take a one-stroke lead over Troy in the Edwin Watts-Kiawah Island Spring Classic women’s college golf tournament.

The event, billed as the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, is being played at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Osprey Point and Oak point. Teams play one round each at Osprey Point and Oak Point, then the top 20 teams after Monday’s round advance to the championship division at Osprey Point. The remainder of the teams compete for a flight championship at Oak Point.

North Florida, which played Osprey Point on Sunday, was led individually by Mary Dawson, who is tied for eighth overall with an opening 72.

Melania Bajo Geijo of Jacksonville State took the individual lead with 4-under 68 at Oak Point that included five birdies and one bogey. The best score at Osprey Point was a 69 by Samford’s Bailey Gray.

Laura Fuenfstueck led host College of Charleston with a 2-under 70 at Osprey Point. The Cougars are tied for fourth overall with an opening 300.

Charleston Southern, tied for 19th in the team standings, was led by Hayley McNeill, who shot even-par 72 at Osprey Point.

The Citadel, 37th, was led by Eraina Manor with an 80 at Oak Point.
