Newton’s 3-hitter helps fuel Wando

Wando’s Kasey Cox steals third base as a throw goes over the head of Irmo’s Courtney Law during the first round of the Class AAAA softball playoffs Wednesday.

MOUNT PLEASANT — The Wando Warriors softball team earned its 20th victory of the season Wednesday night with a 7-0 victory over Irmo in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. The Warriors also earned a second-round home game on Saturday when they play Fort Dorchester.

Wando (20-6) collected 13 hits, and pitcher Danica Newton pitched a three-hitter.

Warriors coach Steve Leggette was concerned his team made two errors and didn’t play as well as they could.

“But at this stage of the season, we’ll take whatever gets us through, whatever it takes to get to the next round. After the second inning, they never got a runner past second base.”

Newton, who improved to 16-4, struck out seven batters and had plenty of support.

The Warriors scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and added two more in the bottom of the third to settle the issue.

In the first inning, Rebecca Toribio hit an RBI single and Tori Frank brought in the other run when she reached on an error.

Virginia Moore led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple and scored on Brooke Gilbert’s RBI single. Gilbert eventually scored on Anna Marie Stafford’s RBI single.

Niki Pelligrini went 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Mary Margaret Taylor was 3 for 3 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Frank was 2 for 3 with a stolen base and an RBI.
