Neal commits to USC

  • Updated

Rising junior wide receiver DJ Neal of Stone Mountain, Ga., committed to South Carolina on Thursday following his spring game. Neal becomes the Gamecocks’ first commitment for the 2015 class.

Neal had been planning to commit to the Gamecocks ever since he received an offer from them earlier this month. Neal has visited USC in the past and will visit again Saturday.

“I felt like I fit in around their program,” Neal said. “The depth chart is what really pulled me toward South Carolina. I think I’ll be able to make big plays for them.”

Last season, Neal caught 91 passes for nearly 1,000 yards. Neal said he might visit some other schools over the next several months but his mind is set on the Gamecocks.

“It’s going to be pretty hard to pull me away unless something happens with the depth chart,” Neal said. “That’s the only thing that might change my mind.”

Neal said Clemson and Tennessee were the other schools high up on his list. He also has offers from Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Cincinnati and Connecticut.

The Charleston Southern women’s team and head coach Fred Applin announced the signing of Natasha Lebedeva, Alise Karlsone and Marley Brown to national letters of intent for the 2013-14 school year.

Lebedeva and Karlsone come to CSU by way of Iowa Western Community College, while Brown joins the Buccaneers as a true freshman from Katy High School in Texas.

“We are building a foundation for the future and it starts with this recruiting class,” Applin said. “Each of the recruits brings something different to the program.”

The College of Charleston women’s team announced that Mara Argyriou will be joining the team this fall as an incoming freshman. Argyriou comes to the Cougars having been ranked as high as the No. 280 junior in the world by the International Tennis Federation.

Argyriou has also held the No. 1 junior ranking in her home country of Cyprus.
