A trio of boats each released two blue marlin Thursday to grab the top three spots in the Bohicket Marina Invitational Billfish Tournament.
My Three Sons, owned by Hunter Edwards and captained by Michael Mattson, had a doubleheader of blue marlin and is first based on time. My Three Sons released its first blue marlin at 11:09 a.m. and 20 minutes later released the second blue.
Second place is held by Mutts & Jeff, owned and captained by Tom Stanek. Mutts & Jeff released its first blue marlin at 9:51 a.m. and added the second at 11:52 a.m.
Miss Wy, winner of the South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series opening event at Georgetown, continued its strong season and released a blue at 10:04 a.m. and another at 1:33 p.m. Miss Wy, owned by Ed Holder and captained by Matt Wilkinson, released three blue marlin on the final day of the Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament.
Scoring in South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series tournaments is based on releases — 600 points for blue marlin, 300 for white marlin and 200 for sailfish — or one point per pound for blue marlin that meet the Governor’s Cup minimum size of 105 inches and are brought to the scales to be weighed.
There were no tuna or wahoo weighed Thursday. Danny O’Quinn, fishing aboard Summer Girl, landed the top dolphin, a 36.0-pound catch.
Fifteen of the 20 entries in the Bohicket tournament used Thursday as a fish day, and the participants released 10 blue marlin and three sailfish. The tournament continues through Saturday, with boats allowed to fish two out of the three days, captain’s choice. The weigh-ins begin at 5 p.m.
