Missouri leads Gamecocks in Hootie golf

Missouri fired an 11-under-par score of 277 Sunday to take the first-round lead in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.

Close on the heels of the Tigers is fifth-ranked South Carolina, which finished at 8-under and is trying to make it eight straight events with a top-five finish or better. Coastal Carolina is third, five strokes behind Missouri.

Defending champion Auburn is fifth at 285. The College of Charleston is tied for 11th at 95 while Charleston Southern is 15th at 315.

There is a four-way tie for the individual lead at 67 between Auburn’s Matt Gilchrest, Coastal Carolina’s Andrew Dorn, New Mexico’s Gavin Green and Missouri’s Jacob Fair.

The Gamecocks were led by Matthew NeSmith and Will Starks, who both opened with 69s. Anthony Gabriele led the College of Charleston with a 71. Charleston Southern’s Will Peiper and Jake Ezell both shot 78 to lead the Buccaneers.

Tee times for Monday’s second round begin at 9 a.m.
