Beaufort took advantage of four West Ashley turnovers to roll over the homestanding Wildcats, 34-0, at Wildcat Stadium on Friday night.

The special teams for the Eagles (4-1) were just that, as they returned two punts for 75 and 90 yards. One of the returns was for a score, while the 75 yarder set up Beaufort for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Beaufort coach Mark Clifford liked what he saw of his special teams.

"I thought we were a little sloppy tonight," Clifford said. "But our special teams, particularly the punt return squad, played extremely well."

The Eagles (4-1) took the kickoff and promptly drove 76 yards in seven plays with tailback Alex Simmons rumbling for 33 yards to give Beaufort a 7-0 lead.

Interceptions killed West Ashley's first two drives, as both Karon Eady and Thomas Woodhead threw picks.

Woodhead's interception led directly to a Beaufort score, as Josh McPherson scored from 37 yards to make it 14-0 Eagles early in the second quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Wildcats' David Campbell returned the kick 42 yards. After a 15 yard facemask penalty set up the Wildcats at the Eagles' 38 yard line, West Ashley stalled. After a punt, Beaufort's Travis Lawton and returned it 75 yards to the Wildcat 10. Quarterback Beau Brown ran it in on the first play to make it 20-0.

West Ashley (2-3) appeared ready to score late in the half, driving to the Beaufort 3-yard line with 34 seconds left. But on fourth down, Jared Mole lost a yard on a pitchout to end the threat.

On the Wildcats' first drive of the second half, the Eagles' Brandon Frazier gathered in a a Woodhead punt at his own 10 and raced almost untouched 90 yards to make it 27-0.

The Eagles capped a 10-play, 57-yard drive late in the third quarter with Simmons scoring again, this time on a 3-yard run.

The Wildcats had one last chance to score, driving to the Beaufort 1 with just under six minutes left in the game. But on second-and-goal, Mole fumbled into the end zone and the Eagles recovered for the touchback.

"I have to admit, we were happy with the shutout," said Clifford.

McPherson led the way for the Eagles with 84 yards on 10 carries, while Simmons had 62 yards on eight carries to go with his two TDs. Brown completed 6 of 10 passes for 77 yards.
