A man stole a fire truck in Port Royal, crashed it into several cars and struck and killed a pedestrian before driving the vehicle into some woods, authorities said.

S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said the patrol is investigating the fatal accident, and Port Royal police are probing the theft and other accidents.

"He stole a firetruck and caused some wrecks and killed a pedestrian," Beres said.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Pine Court at 4:25 p.m., according to the patrol.

The Beaufort Fire Department was responding to a call at about 4 p.m. at Laurel Hill apartments, when the fire engine was stolen, the Beaufort area news media has reported.
