Maurer wins Swim Around Charleston

Matt Maurer, 36, of Charleston won the solo division in the third Swim Around Charleston held Saturday. Maurer finished the 12-mile swim in a time of 4 hours, 35 minutes, 46 seconds. Thirty-one solo swimmers completed the race.

The course took swimmers from Remleys Point in Mount Pleasant, across the Cooper River and around the Charleston peninsula and finished in the Ashley River at the Westmoreland Bridge.

Florida swimmer Mark Smitherman, 55, finished second in a time of 4:39:22. Justin Vagts was third in 4:49:56.

The top female finisher was Lisa Hertz of Winter Haven, Fla., who was seventh overall in a time of 4:58:38.There also were two- and four-person relays.
