COLUMBIA — Adam Matthews hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning to lead South Carolina to a 1-0 victory over Alabama on Friday afternoon to complete the first game of the three-game SEC baseball series.

The game was halted after seven innings on Thursday because of a thunderstorm, and it only took 18 minutes for the Gamecocks on Friday to earn the win and improve to 31-11 and 12-7 in the SEC.

Alabama drops to 17-26 and 6-13 in league play. Game two of the series was to start at 7 p.m. Friday.
