Right fielder Julio Martinez went 4-for-4 with a double and home run as the Lexington Legends collared the Charleston RiverDogs, 7-2, on Friday night in front of 6,567 fans at Riley Park.
The Legends (1-1) struck first when Jose Altuve singled, stole second, moved to third on Aaron Bray's flyout and scored on Jiovanni Mier's RBI single to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Lexington cruised until Charleston (1-1) knotted the score in the fourth after Kyle Higashioka doubled off starter Juan Minaya, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Garrison Lassiter's RBI fielder's choice. Minaya lasted just 3 1/3 innings allowing a single run on three hits while walking five.
Lexington reliever Arcenio Leon (1-0) kept Charleston off the board over 3 1/3 innings, surrendering just one hit with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Legends took a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Altuve reached on a Rob Lyerly error, Bray followed with a walk, and Altuve scored on Mier's fielder's choice. Mier then plated the Legends' third run when Martinez blasted a two-run shot over the left field wall off Charleston starter Graham Stoneburner (0-1).
Ben Watkins relieved Stoneburner and quelled the rally after Martinez's homer. Stoneburner, a former Clemson standout making his Charleston debut, went 4 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking two.
