Marks sets record in Fort 2 Battery race

Zack Marks of St. Petersburg, Fla., smashed the previous record in the second Fort 2 Battery sailing race held Sunday.

Competing on a kite and foilboard, Marks covered the 3.8-mile race from Fort Sumter to the Charleston Battery in 6 minutes, 10 seconds, an average of 34 mph. A year ago, Bora Gulari won the inaugural event in a Moth with a time of 8 minutes, 56 seconds.

There were approximately 80 entries for the 2015 event.

Other winners included: Second overall, Top kiteboard – Twin tip/Surf, Tucker Mason, Charleston; Top catamaran – Greg and John Walters, Charleston, Hobie 20; Top Moth – Johnny Goldsberry, San Francisco; Top boat – Wes Skinner, Charleston, Force 5; Top Youth – Neil Walters, Charleston, kiteboard (11th overall); Youngest racer – Ronan Lurkin, Charleston, 12; Furthest traveled – Andrew Brazier, Canada, Moth.
