Look out! Top Braves prospect's drives are doing serious damage

Braves outfielder Jason Heyward may be the top prospect in baseball.

A 27-year-old driver was ticketed early this morning after troopers said he ran a stop sign and struck a school bus south of Cross in Berkeley County.

The S.C. Highway Patrol said Christopher Gerlach of Moncks Corner was eastbound on Highway 311 about 5:51 a.m., when his 1998 Buick hit a 2009 Thomas school bus that was heading south on Mudville Road.

No students were on the bus at the time.

"He disregarded the stop sign and struck the school bus," patrol spokesman Cpl. Bob Beres said. "He tried to stop but slid through the stop sign into the school bus."

The bus driver, 45-year-old Lesia Vinson of Pineville, was injured and taken to Trident Medical Center.

Vinson and Gerlach, who was not hurt, both were wearing a seat belt.
