Sabine Lisicki, the 2009 Family Circle Cup champion, will return to Charleston to defend her title in April.
The 20-year-old German joins top-ranked Serena Williams, No. 3 Carolina Wozniacki, No. 8 Jelena Jankovic, No. 16 Maria Sharapova and other top-20 players in the field for the clay-court event scheduled April 10-18 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island.
Lisicki captured the first singles title of her career in the 2009 tournament. At No. 62 in the world, she also became the lowest-ranked player to win the title. She finished the 2009 season as the world's No. 25 player.
"The Family Circle Cup is one of my favorite events on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. I had so much fun last year, and I'll never forget winning my first title in Charleston," Sabine Lisicki said in a statement released by tournament officials. "I look forward to competing there again in April."
