Liberty 4, Charleston Southern 1
Liberty's Shawn Teufel and Josh Richardson held Charleston Southern in check, limiting the Buccaneers to five hits in a 4-1 win in Big South baseball Saturday at CSU Ballpark.
The Bucs (17-28, 6-13) stranded 10 runners and wasted a strong outing by Tyler Thornburg, allowing three unearned runs by the Flames (36-12, 17-3).
The Flames took a 2-0 lead on a two-run double by Kenneth Negron in the second inning.
Jesse Cadenhead had an RBI triple for CSU.
The teams play at 2 p.m. today.
The Buccaneers scored their lone run in the fourth following an RBI triple for Jesse Cadenhead, who drove in Patrick Dolan. Cadenhead stood on third with no outs, but Liberty escaped further damage.
Liberty added two insurance runs in the seventh following a costly error.
Thornburg (5-3) pitched six innings and allowed just two runs, one earned, on only four hits. He struck out eight and walked three.
Teufel (10-1) gave up just one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Josh Richardson blanked CSU in the final 2 1/3 innings, picking up his sixth save of the year.
Andrew White (1-4, 5.69) is scheduled to pitch for Charleston Southern in the series finale today, while Liberty will counter with Dustin Umberger (1-2, 5.06).
