Larry Legend plans school supply giveaway Friday

Larry Legend’s DREAMS will hold its 10th annual free Back to School Supplies giveaway from 1-4 p.m. Friday at the A.W. Christopher City Gym, located at 65 Hagood Ave., Charleston, across from Burke High School.

The event is hosted by playground basketball star “Larry Legend” (Lawrence Gadsden), who grew up in the Bronx, N.Y. Gadsden now tries to mentor youth with his Larry Legend’s DREAMS, Inc.

Gadsden will speak from 1:30-2 p.m., and youth games with cheerleaders will take place from 2-3 p.m. The school supplies giveaway will be held from 3-4 p.m.

South Carolina forward A’ja Wilson turned in another strong performance at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Vindoe, Russia, on Wednesday, tallying a team-high 18 points to lead USA Basketball past Argentina, 89-39. With the victory, head coach Dawn Staley and the Americans advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals against Canada.

Wilson boasted one of her best shooting performances of the tournament, as she finished 7-10 from the floor. She converted four of her six free throw attempts and chipped in four assists for the Americans, who never trailed in the game. Wilson enters Friday’s quarterfinal round with tournament averages of 16.8 points and 7.8 rebounds.
