When the crew of the Juggernaut landed a big king mackerel Saturday, they called friends and family and told them to be on hand for the weigh-in at the 17th annual Key West Boats Fishing for Miracles King Mackerel Tournament.
And none of those who made the drive from Beaufort were disappointed when the fish was placed on the scales at Ripley Light Yacht Club and the weight registered 34.1 pounds, giving boat owner Bert Harvey and crew members A.C. Harvey and Jim Roberts their second win in the Fishing for Miracles tournament.
The fish helped Juggernaut take home checks totaling $43,465 -- the $25,000 grand prize, $10,665 in the Super Tournament Within a Tournament, $5,7000 for the Tournament Within a Tournament along with $2,100 for finishing third in the aggregate Tournament Within a Tournament for a two-fish total of 49.2 pounds.
"We knew we had a good one. It really smoked the line good," Roberts said of Juggernaut's fish. "It was a tough bite. We weighed a 15-pound fish yesterday."
Roberts would not reveal where the fish was caught, simply saying "outside the jetties."
"We've still got one more tournament," Roberts said.
The fish was caught on a mullet fished long and it took 20 to 25 minutes to get it to the gaff, Roberts said.
First-day leader Cool Cat out of Hilton Head did not weigh a fish Saturday, but Chris Prince's 32.4-pound fish caught Friday held on to capture second place and earn a total of $10,920.
Bow Movement held on and finished third with a 32.2-pound catch on Friday, worth $7,280.
This year's tournament, which benefits the MUSC Children's Hospital and the Coastal Conservation Association, drew 185 boats. Fishing numbers were off, with only eight fish over 30 pounds; during last year's tournament, it took 31.18 pounds to make the top 30 and cast a check.
