The J24 fleet will again be one of the highlights of the Charleston Yacht Club Regatta competing this weekend in Charleston Harbor.
The regatta will serve as the J24 Southeast Regional championship and 15 boats are expected to participate, said sailing chairman Alex Bolan. The winning SAYRA (South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association) team will be eligible to submit their resume to U.S. Sailing to be considered for admission to the U.S. Sailing Adult Championship and the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy.
“The J24s will be sailing Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Bolan said, noting that the official Charleston Yacht Club Regatta will be sailed Saturday and Sunday. “We are expecting 120 to 150 boats to participate.”
In addition to the J24 competition, Bolan said all the usual one design classes are expected. Special awards include the club’s Lockwood Award and Women’s Award. The Lockwood Trophy goes to an active racing sailor from Charleston Yacht Club who best exemplifies the combination of passion and dedication to the sport. The Women’s Award is presented to an outstanding sailor in the Charleston area that displays skill, sportsmanship and character on and off the water and serves as a role model for younger female sailors.
Sailing is scheduled to begin at noon Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
