Home Run leads opening day of MegaDock Billfishing Tournament

Four boats accounted for all 10 billfish releases Thursday in the MegaDock Billfishing Tournament, the final event of the 2015 South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series.

Home Run, the 2006 MegaDock winner, released four sailfish and earned first place over Can’t Complain which also released four sailfish. Both boats have 800 points (200 for each sailfish release) but Home Run, owned by Steve Mungo and captained by Grant Bentley, caught its fourth sailfish one minute before Can’t Complain to earn the tie-breaker advantage. Can’t Complain is owned by Mullins McLeod and captained by Buddy Aimar.

Third place with 600 points for a blue marlin release is held by J&B, owned by Bob Bleeker and captained by Alan Murray.

The Miss Wy, which was second in the Governor’s Cup standings to Reel Passion going into the MegaDock tournament, made up 600 of its 1,500-point deficit with a blue marlin release.

Rookie IV, owned by Eddie Buck Sr. and captained by Jay Champlin, leads two of the meatfish categories with Eddie Buck Jr. the angler on a 34.6-pound wahoo and a 13.6-pound blackfin tuna. Curt O’Donnell, fishing aboard Hammertime, owned by Steve Mozeley and captained by Austin Eubank, has the top dolphin at 24.6 pounds.

Fishing continues Friday and Saturday. Sixteen of the 25 entries elected to use Thursday as one of their two allotted fish days. Weigh-ins at the City Marina begin at 5 p.m.
