The plaque honoring fired Penn State president Graham Spanier, a 1966 graduate of Highland Park High School in Chicago, was removed from the lobby of the North Shore school in the midst of a child sex-abuse scandal that has also claimed famed coach Joe Paterno.

Spanier's name has also been erased from the school's website, where it had been listed among distinguished alumni, officials said.

"Our distinguished alumni need to be role models," Super- intendent George Fornero said. "Unfortunately, the actions in this case generate a lot of questions about Spanier's involvement. In an attempt to protect our students, the plaque has been removed."

Spanier's plaque and photo came down the morning after he was fired by Penn State's board of trustees Wednesday.
