James Island High's version of Tim Tebow, senior quarterback Justin Bolus, rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Trojans to a 28-10 win over Colleton County on Thursday night.
Bolus scored on runs of 84, 29 and 53 yards to stake James Island to a 3-0 start this season.
'He's a big, strong guy and he's a lot faster than he looks,' said James Island head coach Randy Hillyer of his safety turned quarterback. 'He will stick it up in there and get the tough yards, but you saw him run away from some people on a few of those runs. He gets it done either way.'
Junior running back Cornell Stanley added 119 yards rushing as James Island rushed for nearly 350 yards in the game.
Bolus scored on James Island's first offensive snap, racing around right end and down the sidelines untouched on the 84-yard score.
The 6-3, 210-pounder went 29 yards for a score on James Island's first possession of the second half, push
ing the lead to 21-3.He added the 53-yarder to give the Trojans a 28-3 lead with 4:02 left in the third quarter.
'I have to give my O-line and receivers all the credit,' said Bolus. 'I had some huge holes to run through all night. There were several times I didn't even get touched. That's those guys up front doing their job.'
Devin Brown scored the Trojans' other touchdown on a 50-yard punt return with a minute left in the first quarter.
James Island's defense also came up big, allowing Colleton County less than 75 yards rushing and keeping them the Cougars of the endzone until the games' final seconds.
Linebacker Taylor Morris had double-digit tackles for the Trojans.
'If you're going to compete and win in Region 7 and Region 8 (AAAA), you have to be able to stop the run,' said James Island coach Randy Hillyer.
'Our defense did a great job tonight. We took away the run early and kind of forced them into some things they don't like to do.
'I challenged our guys at halftime to put this game away early in the second half,' said Hillyer. 'We had a 14-3 lead at the half but we left some points out there. I told them good teams come out and put a team away in the third quarter and that's what we did.'
James Island will open Region 7-AAAA play next week at Wando.
'It starts for real next week and I know we'll have to play well to beat a team like Wando,' said Hillyer.
