Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston withstood a four-hour weather delay and a final-round charge by Goose Creek’s Katelyn Dambaugh to win the 86th Women’s Carolinas Amateur Championship at Yeamans Hall Club Thursday.
With only four holes remaining following a shotgun start, lightning in the area forced a suspension of play and all flights except the championship flight were shortened to 36 holes.
Higgins, who just completed her sophomore season at the University of South Carolina, posted a final-round 74 and finished the 54-hole tournament at 2-over-par 218. Dambaugh, who has committed to play at South Carolina, had a final-round 72 for a 219 total. Kathryn Miranda of Lexington, who just finished her sophomore season at the College of Charleston, was third at 222.
“Even though we had a long delay, I was glad to finish,” said Higgins, who won the 2009 South Carolina Junior played at Yeamans Hall. “It’s always nice to win a championship without an asterisk next to the score. I was able to stay focused on my own game all throughout the day and I kept sticking to my plan.
“This is a special championship with a long history and I’m glad to have my name on the trophy along with so many other special champions”
Dambaugh, a former U.S. Junior girls runner-up, trailed Higgins by two shots going to the final hole. She reached the par-5 in two shots but was unable to make the eagle putt for a tie.
Carole Jones of Hillsborough, N.C., won the Carolinas Tee division and super senior trophy with a score of 155. Patty Moore of Charlotte won the senior division with a score of 229.
