Heritage attendance highest in 5 years

HILTON HEAD ISLAND — Attendance at the RBC Heritage Classic golf tournament on Hilton Head island was the highest in five years as more than 125,000 fans showed up this year.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (the tournament also boosted the local economy.

Chris Tobia of the Heritage Classic Foundation credited the improving economy and new sponsors RBC Bank and Boeing with helping this year’s turnout.

Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Charlie Clark says average occupancy at eight major hotels was 97 percent Friday night. Tom Ridgway with Hilton Head Rentals and Golf said occupancy for villas and condos also reached that level and it was the busiest during the tournament in years.

Carl Petterson scored a five-shot victory over Zach Johnson to win the tournament Sunday.
