HANAHAN -- The Hanahan boys soccer team started slowly in Thursday night's Class AA playoff game against Barnwell. But it picked up steam to gain another impressive victory.
Hanahan won, 5-1, and has outscored opponents, 12-1, in two games.
The Hawks trailed 1-0, but scored in the 20th and 35th minutes to take a 2-1 halftime lead. The Hawks put the game out of reach with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
"I was really happy, especially with the way we played in the second half," Hanahan coach Jeff Taylor said. "We came out flat. We beat them twice in the regular season, and I think the kids were a little complacent. I liked the way we fought back."
The Hawks advanced to Saturday's third round. The Hawks go to Daniel Island to take on defending state champion Bishop England.
"We have to be ready. We can't fall behind in that game," Taylor said. "That would be the kiss of death. Obviously, they have more skilled players. We have skilled players, too. But we can't fall behind. We have to get an early goal to let them know they are playing with fire. We have to send them a message."
Alex Jaramillo and Roberto Medina both scored two goals for the Hawks. Shane Devereux added the other goal.
