HANAHAN — Just three days after Bret Hines’ complete-game, one-hit effort, fans at Sportsmans Field were treated to another one-hit performance. This time, however, it was Charleston Southern signee Kyle Dyson who impressed.

The right-handed senior’s shutout led Hanahan to a 1-0 win over visiting Marion Saturday evening in the opening round of the double-elimination Class AA Lower State baseball tournament.

It was an unfortunate start for Swamp Fox third baseman Malik Lightfoot, whose back-to-back errors allowed the Hawks’ first two hitters to reach base. Hanahan would take advantage of the miscues when Hunter Bessinger’s infield single plated leadoff hitter Ryan Manore, and that run proved to be the difference.

Manore doubled in the third inning to again reach base, but the right fielder was gunned down attempting to take advantage of an errant throw after stealing third.

The Hawks also attempted to provide some breathing room in the sixth inning. Bessinger led off the stanza with a double to right-center field before a failed suicide squeeze ended the threat.

Dyson faced 22 batters — just one more than the minimum — and ended the night with four strikeouts and three walks.

Marion pitcher Chris Washington had a quality outing of his own. Forced to cope with a quick turnaround after pitching in the Swamp Foxes’ 3-1 District 5 championship victory on Wednesday, the left-hander scattered six hits and struck out nine.

“We faced a very good pitcher,” Hawks coach Brian Mitchell said. “A very good pitcher. I was told by three or four different coaches that (Washington) could pitch. We saw him last year and he looked good, and he’s gotten better.”

The game, which lasted only an hour and 20 minutes, means Hanahan will travel to Bishop England — a familiar opponent — on Monday at 6 p.m.

“This is the fourth year in a row we’ve been in this same exact situation,” Mitchell said. “We’ve played them a lot the last few years and we know each other very well. We expect it to be another great game.”
