The 45th annual Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament will kick off the 2012 South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series today out of Georgetown Landing Marina.
Thirty-six boats have entered this year’s Georgetown tournament, three more than a year ago when participants released six blue marlin, 30 white marlin and nine sailfish. Sportin’ Life, owned by Manly and Graham Eubank of Charleston and captained by Mike Glaesner, won the tournament by releasing two blue marlin and two sailfish.
Boats in Governor’s Cup events are allowed to fish two out of three days, captain’s choice. Released fish score 600 points for blue marlin, 300 for white marlin and 200 for sailfish. Blue marlin are the only billfish species that are allowed to be brought in and score one point per pound and the blue marlin must measure at least 105 inches.
The last event in which a blue marlin was brought to the dock was the 2010 Bohicket tournament when a 515-pound blue was caught by the boat Blue Sky.
