Goose Creek takes lead in playoff game

Goose Creek is set to play Bluffton tonight in the playoffs.

GOOSE CREEK — The Goose Creek Gators ended a tumultuous week off the football field with a 35-25 victory over Bluffton Friday night in the second round of the Division II-AAAA playoffs.

Goose Creek rolled to a 28-19 lead after three quarters behind Rico Blanding, who scored three touchdowns.

The Gators converted a bad snap on a Bluffton punt into a score with a 17-yard drive. Blanding scored on a 3-yard run to make it 7-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

The Gators were playing with Caleb Kinlaw, who injured his ankle last week. Blanding, Tramel Terry and Rashard Alston got most of the carries Blanding scored his second TD on a 2-yard plunge with 10:22 left in the first half to push the lead to 14-0.

The Gators turned their third turnover recovery into a score when Omar McRae returned an intercetption 22 yards with 9:50 left in the first half.

The Bobacts finally didn’t self-destruct and put togther a good drive that was capped with 7:08 left in the first half when C.J. Frazier hooked up with Demetrius Smalls for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Frazier also passed 15 yards to Marquise Webber for the Bobcats’ other first-half score.

Blanding ripped off a 41 yard touchdown run with 3:51 left in the first half.

Midway through the third quarter, Bluffton picked up a key first down on a fake punt and John Robinson ripped off a 45-yard TD run.
