GOOSE CREEK -- Goose Creek and fullback Virgil Smalls continued punishing the opposition as the postseason dawned.
The Shrine Bowl selection rushed for 160 yards and scored four touchdowns to power the top-seeded Gators to a 49-12 win over Lancaster in the opening round of the Class AAAA Division II playoffs on Friday night at John Fulmer Field.
Smalls, who has committed to play at South Carolina, has scored 31 touchdowns for the Gators (11-1). He scored on runs of 10, 5, 1 and 3 yards.
"I'm very pleased," Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy said. "It's good to get a good solid win. We had some turnovers in the first half that kept us from taking over the game early but once we got rolling, got going, we controlled the game."
Quarterback Jaquan Marsh added 120 yards, scoring on a 56-yard run. He also passed for 107 yards and threw for a score, a 16-yard strike to Zack Lavery. Caleb Kinlaw, who finished with 73 yards, had a 54-yard touchdown run on the fourth play from scrimmage to ignite the Gators. They had 509 yards of offense to more than offset their three turnovers.
The Gators scored a pair of touchdowns in the final four minutes of the first half to go up 28-6 and coasted from there.
Reedy's team hosts defending II-AAAA champion Northwestern in the second round on Friday.
The Trojans, who will enter the matchup with an 8-4 mark, ousted Goose Creek in the state semifinals last season.
Lancaster ends the season with a 6-6 record. The Bruins finished with just 205 yards, 88 of which came on Roy Watts' long touchdown run with 78 seconds left in the game.
Lancaster also had three turnovers to match Goose Creek in that stat. Kelby Bryant had two interceptions for the Gators.
"We can't afford three turnovers against a really good team and expect to win football games," Reedy said. "That's definitely something we've got to get corrected."
The longest scoring play of the game was an 88-yard run by Lancaster's Roy Watts. That score came after Smalls posted Goose Creek's final TD on a 3-yard run.
