Goose Creek fell behind 7-0 Friday night as Wando scored on its first possession of the game. But the state’s No. 1 team came up with big plays on offense, defense and special teams to roll to a 35-14 victory in a battle of Region 7-AAAA undefeated heavyweights.
The Gators won their 22nd straight game in front of about 7,000 fans at Wando Stadium. They improved to 9-0 on the season, including 2-0 in the region. The fifth-ranked Warriors fell to 8-1, 2-1.
With the score tied 7-7 late in the second quarter, the Gators scored two touchdowns to take a 21-7 lead at halftime.
The Gators’ Tramel Terry scored on a 5-yard run with 4:49 left in the first half to make it 14-7.
Wando gambled with a fake punt on fourth-and long on its next possession. Goose Creek stuffed the play as Omar McRae made the tackle 12 yards from the first-down stick and Goose Creek took over on the Warriors’ 39.
Bennamon hit Terry for a a 34-yard pass and two plays later, Caleb Kinlaw scored on a 5-yard run and just like that, it was 21-7.
The Gators made it 28-7 with a 69-yard scoring drive to begin the second half. Terry had the big plays with a 22-yard catch and another that covered 26 yards and put six more points on the scoreboard.
Wando threatened on its next posession, but McRae picked off his second pass of the game.
The Warriors marched 80 yards on their first possession with a good blend of pass and run and took a 7-0 lead when Stevie Wilson bulled in from the 1-yardline.
The Gators tied with with a 75-yard drive. Quarteback Dantez Bennamon found Caleb Homes open in the endzone for a 17-yard touchdown pass.
