Goose Creek boys upset Fort Dorchester

Goose Creek took out a No. 1 seed Wednesday to advance in the Class AAAA boys basketball playoffs.

Goose Creek, the No. 4 seed from Region 7, earned a 52-46 win at Fort Dorchester in the opening round.

“I’m proud of the kids,” Goose Creek coach Blake Hall said. “They came into someone else’s home, the No. 1 seed from Region 8, and they competed. They stuck to the game plan we had in place and made some shots. This is a tribute to the kids’ focus and effort this week.”

Goose Creek improved to 14-10 on the season and advances to play in the second round Feb. 21 at the winner of the South Florence/North Augusta first-round game. Fort Dorchester finishes the season with a 17-5 record.

Fort Dorchester only trailed by a point at halftime, but Goose Creek went on a 12-6 run in the third quarter to take a 34-27 lead. The Patriots cut the lead to two with just under two minutes remaining and to a single point off a shot from behind the arc by sophomore Kiyoun Reese with 25 seconds remaining.

Shortly after, Goose Creek senior Devin McFadden was sent to the free throw line and hit his first free throw. He missed his second, but grabbed his own rebound and went up for a basket for a 50-46 Gator lead. After Fort Dorchester missed a shot on the other end of the court, senior Allen Robinson was fouled and hit two free throws to ice the game.

Robinson finished with a game-high 16 points, while Jordan McElveen added 13 points for Goose Creek.

Reese led Fort Dorchester with 13 points, while senior William Munoz added 11 for the Patriots.

“In the playoffs you have to play with intensity and I don’t think we came out with the intensity we needed,” Fort Dorchester coach Leon Wheaton said. “Goose Creek came out and kind of took the fight to us and we probably waited a little too late to start pressuring up on them. Also we just had some moments tonight when the ball didn’t drop. We had a layup that could have tied the game that didn’t fall and we lost possession on a rebound late in the game and that cost us.”
